As legacy car companies begin to electrify existing models, Goodyear Tires is teaming up with a Dutch research organization, The Netherland’s Organization for Applied Scientific Research (TNO), to modernize anti-lock braking systems (ABS), soon to be used in connected vehicles and autonomous driving.

Adding even more noise to the future of car manufacturing, Goodyear continues to contribute to Northeast Ohio’s history of automobile innovation, as the partnership seeks out ways to optimize steerability and control. The collaborators set out to test the implications of connected tires and how they will interact with the vehicle’s control system.

“There is a tremendous opportunity when you consider the information the tire can convey to the vehicle in a connected environment,” said Chris Queen, Goodyear Senior Director of Innovation Technology.

Previous studies suggest that the integration of such features would allow for a 30% reduction in the time it takes a driver to safely come to a complete stop, should an emergency arise while traveling from Point-A to Point-B. By connecting Goodyear’s intelligent tires directly to the vehicle’s ABS system, their joint functionality becomes situational, allowing the driver to have…
